Before the making of Zootopia, Disney wanted a unique film, and both directors were given a task to create unique characters, which were never shown before. Both Byron Howard and Rick Moore went to Africa for two years, to get a better grasp of the coexistence of predators and prey. They realized that they could send a powerful message through this film.
Producer Clark Spencer noted that The Lion King opens up the door to talk about death, whereas Bambi’s death is shocking and painful to watch. However, instead of fear and death, the two directors talked about discrimination and racism. These delicate topics are supposed to be discussed, and it is easier to do it with an animated film.
