Great news for everybody who likes 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie – its spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee which is made by alumni of the original series and is set to come out on April 11, 2017.
When it comes to the Wii U version, it is officially canceled. It has been promised by Yooka-Laylee’s crowdfunding ever since its Kickstarter began in May 2015 but now Nintendo has some other projects coming out. Namely, the Switch, its newest console is supposed to be launched at some point before the game comes out.
Everyone is wondering what it will look like, but Playtonic Games didn’t reveal any details, apart from that they are doing their best cooperating with Nintendo and that at this moment they can’t give us any further information.
Namely, there is an opportunity for all people who donated to the project on Kickstarter in order to get the Wii U version to pick some other version of the game or opt for a Nintendo Switch when it is released.
However, there are donors who insisted on the Wii U version and won’t accept anything else, so there is an option for them to get refunds from Playtonic. As we find out from the FAQ page, the Playtonic team didn’t decide to give up on this version easily. They have been trying for months to bring Yooka-Laylee to Wii U, but there have been too many technical issued, hence they had to give it up.
Moreover, there will be a pre-order incentive for the Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Users will have an opportunity to try Yooka-Laylee Toybox, which is, as Playtonic says ‘a self-contained, spoiler-free sandbox’ environment. They want to make the console Toybox available to appropriate backers, so that’s what they are currently working on.
Another feature Playtonic is working on is changing Kickstarter backers’ pledge for a digital version into one for a disc release. Nonetheless, they first need to make sure they do everything correctly in order not to be late for the already set release date.
