The climate in the Antarctic is harsh, and during long and dark winter months, the Emperor penguins incubate their eggs. The courtship displays are tricky but sophisticated, and females usually lay their egg in May or June. After that, her mate takes care of the egg while females spend their next nine weeks at sea, feeding. In order to keep the egg warm, the male balances it on his feet for about 70 days in a specially adapted brood pouch. The egg is now ready to hatch.
