Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s PS4 might have scored the initial lead over the Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One, thanks largely in part to a $100 price difference; however, the software giant is quickly narrowing the difference. Microsoft Xbox One-Titanfall bundle is now available at a discounted price, which would certainly help the company to win over more audience.
A move from retailers
Wal-Mart and Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) have both lowered the price of the game to $450. The move can be viewed as an aggressive as the company recently launched the Titanfall bundle for $500 a week and a half ago. Now, the difference is just $50 between the software and PlayStation 4. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is also getting into the action. Though the game is still listed at $499, using the promo code “xiamazon” the price is lowered to $450.
As reported by New York Times, the price change has come from the retailers, and the company’s suggested retail price remains the same. So, assuming a user buys the $60 game separately, total hardware cost is now down to $389, or $10 less than the PS4.
David Dennis, a spokesman for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), said “This is a special promotion offered by Walmart and Best Buy stores in the U.S.,” and added “Microsoft sets a suggested retail price, but specific pricing and offers vary by retailer.”
‘Marathon’ not a ‘Sprint’
Earlier this month, the sales for PS4 crossed 6 million milestones while Microsoft is still to update its Xbox One sales tally. In January, Microsoft updated the tally to 3.9 million mark.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) corporate vice president Phil Harrison reiterated that the sales race between Xbox One and PlayStation is a “marathon, not a sprint.”
Recently, Microsoft also benefited from the scarcity of PlayStation 4s on store shelves. Jeff Shelman, a spokesman for Best Buy, informed via email that the inventory for PS4 would improve, in the coming time. On Friday, Sony’s exclusive offering, Infamous Second Son for PS4 went on sale. It’s an adventure packed game set in a dystopian Seattle.
