Even though the New England Patriots lack that major star on the offensive side of the ball when Rob Gronkowski is hurt, they have a lot of weapons that can explode and make a difference on any given night. The most recent example of that was Chris Hogan torching the Steelers for 180 yards on 9 catches. During the Super Bowl, that guy was James White, running back that was catching the ball all over the field and making plays that led the Patriots to their 5th title in franchise history.
James White is one of the three running backs that the Patriots have. Blount had a rough first half, and Bill just doesn’t seem to trust Dion Lewis after his fumbles in a game against the Texans. James White saw a lot of the snaps in the second half of the match, and he was the difference maker that New England was looking for.
He was drafted in the fourth round out of Wisconsin and made a big impact during the season, but saw a low amount of snaps in the Playoffs. On the other hand, he just played over 50 snaps in the biggest game of his life. White ended up with Super Bowl record-setting 14 receptions and 110 receiving yards even though he is a running back. He also scored two of the Patriots touchdowns in this duel and one of them was a game winner on a pitch-and-run action from Tom Brady. Patriots needed two two-pt conversions, and one of those was executed by James White.
“He’s just everything you want in a teammate and a football player,” QB Tom Brady said. “Dependable. Consistent. Durable. The best attitude, he brings it every day, and we just kept going to him. I think that speaks for itself.”
When it comes to game-winning play, White said: “It was a toss play. I just had to run through one guy and get the ball into the end zone. I saw a crease. The game is on the line, just got to find a way in. It’s really surreal. I was just living in the moment.”
