The crossovers are definitely all the rage, and not that small number of companies is giving their sedans and hatchbacks more rugged styles and looks in order to widen their appeal. To show everyone they are up with the trends, Toyota also took the veil off their new Aqua model (or the Prius C in some regions).
Although the revision of the Aqua is only modest at best with the new front bumper, restyled headlights, and a modified hood, completed with the updated fenders and new taillights, it actually doesn’t look half as bad. What is even more interesting is that the Toyota introduced a new crossover variant which is distinguished from the regular hatchback by a revised grille, plastic body cladding, and sweet-looking and unique 16-inch aluminum wheels. The crossover version also has roof rails, revised air intakes and what seems to be a fake skid plate.
As far as the interior is considered it will be the same old from the previous model with some slight changes in the form of a new standard TFT multi-information display in the instrument cluster, but that is not all, buyers will also find updated upholstery combinations including new synthetic white leather.
The engine that will power these models will be a hybridized 1.5 L unit that produces a combined output of 100 HP (73 kW). Toyota also made a few tweaks to the engine and the hybrid control system thanks to which the base version now has a fuel economy rating of 38.0 km/L, while the crossover is slightly less economical with its rating of 34.4 km/L.
As far the availability and pricing, the Aqua is currently only available in Japan and pricing starts at ¥1.785.240 ($16,065,45). The crossover variant will arrive next month and cost ¥2.062.800 ($18,563,22). What is unfortunate is that we do not know if the Aqua will be offered in any other market in the world.
