The Ford Mustang made it through the fuel crisis, so downsizing the car seemed to be a good decision after all. The name survived, but the fuel crisis changed it while killing its muscle car rivals. In 1978, Ford wanted to get back to its roots, and they were willing to try producing a performance car once again. One-year-only King Cobra was released. The Cobra had a 302 V8 engine under the hood, but even though the engine was large, it could only produce 139 horsepower. The reason for the small output was emissions and safety regulations imposed by the government. However, the King Cobra was important for Ford, because they were heading in the right direction.
