In 2016, we have had a chance to see so many great films, and according to audiences, the best movies were Captain America and Rogue One. However, critics seem to disagree, and they have a different opinion. Here is the list of the top movies in 2016 and if you disagree with our list write your lineup in the comments, but bear in mind that tastes differ.
10. Sausage Party
The 10th place on our list belongs to an animated movie from Pixar called Sausage Party. When the trailer came out, we assumed that the movie would be hilarious and we knew that it was not one for the kids. Seth Rogan created another film with primitive and wry humor and although the movie was a bit disappointing it managed to reach the top 10 list.
9. Loving
Loving is a movie about race and miscegenation in the US. It is a love story that follows Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) in their battle against nation’s anti-miscegenation laws. The director of this film is Jeff Nichols, and the brilliant acting of Edgerton and Negga place this title on the ninth place of the list.
8. Captain Fantastic
With the elements of comedy and drama, Captain Fantastic is a story of parenthood, or to be more precise – fatherhood. Vigo Mortensen plays the role of a single father Ben, and he struggles to raise his six children. There are touching moments in this movie, and although it still hasn’t reached the popularity it deserves, we strongly suggest you watch it.
7. I, Daniel Blake
I, Daniel Blake is a story about a middle-aged carpenter (Dave Johns) who suffers an injury and requires state welfare. This story is approached from a leftist perspective, and the movie received numerous prizes in Cannes. It criticizes the government that abandons the needs of people like Daniel Blake, and there is no doubt why this film made it to the list.
6. Elle
Elle comes from France, and it is about a woman who tries to track down a man who assaulted her. The main character is Michele Leblanc portrayed by brilliant Isabelle Huppert. The movie is made in an amazing way and although unexpectedly, it manages to elbow its way to the place number six.
5. Toni Erdmann
Toni Erdmann is a movie about a hard working woman who is trying to cope with the problems of contemporary society. On the other hand, her father, Toni Erdmann attempts to reconnect with his daughter by creating an alter ego. This movie reminds us not to lose ourselves in a constant pursuit of happiness and money, and we guarantee you that you will watch this film with a smile on your face.
4. Moonlight
Are you familiar with the term bildungsroman? Instead of a Roman, we have a movie that follows a story about a young black man from childhood to young adulthood. Moonlight covers the topic of life – its ups and downs, obstacles, rewards, happy and sad moments. With an amazing soundtrack and even better cinematography, Moonlight is placed at number four on the list.
3. Jackie
When JFK was assassinated the whole country mourned and now, Chilean director Pablo Larrain takes us back to the 1960s. We will see the assassination from another perspective as Jackie is a story about the then-First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and her struggle to fight pain and regain the faith. With excellent Natalie Portman as Jackie, this movie reached the third spot.
2. Manchester by the Sea
Manchester by the Sea is a story about grief, loss, and battle in life. It is one of those movies after you have seen it, you keep staring for a minute or two. It is a brilliant tale about an uncle who is forced to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies. Directed by Kenneth Lonergan, Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler are starring in this breath-taking drama.
1. Arrival
The best movie in 2016 is a sci-fi/mystery Arrival. Both critics and audience gave this film incredible reviews. The plot begins when 12 mysterious spacecraft appear around the globe. The job of Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is to try to interpret their language and unveil the secrets these aliens carry. Arrival tackles the issues about being a human, losing and finding our humanity. This film is directed by Denis Villeneuve and if you haven’t seen this one yet, watch it is as soon as possible.
