5Australia – Lake Hillier

This one is located on the Middle Island (the largest of the islands making up the Recherche Archipelago in Western Australia), and its most interesting feature is the pink color of the water which does not change even when removed in a container. It has been speculated for a long time about what makes this lake have a bubble gum-like color and the two closest explanations are that this is because of the dye produced by two micro-organisms called Halobacteria and Dunaliella Salina. The other opinion is that the red halophilic bacteria that thrive in the lake’s salt deposits are the ones responsible for the unique color tone.
