The long-awaited TV miniseries The Defenders finally premiered a couple of days ago, on August 18 on Netflix, and judging by the first four episodes, it can be said that it will live up to fans’ expectations. What’s particularly interesting about the show is that it features four Marvel’s superheroes: Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. While there are already four shows dedicated to each of these characters individually, this is the first time one series unites all of them, which, you have to admit, makes it special enough.
In case you still haven’t had the chance to watch it, the series is set a couple of months after the Daredevil Season 2 events and one month after Iron Fist Season 1 events. It is then that the four great characters gather and decide to join their forces to fight their common enemy, the Hand. In the fourth episode, we get to see Iron Fist (portrayed by Finn Jones) embracing his background as Danny Rand, i.e., his alter ego, and, surprisingly enough, he doesn’t seem to be upset by other characters’ mockery, including Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The mash-up simply feels right – it is both funny and laudable.
This good-natured and perhaps even easy-going side of Iron Fist is precisely what we would like to have seen earlier, but, unfortunately, that was not an option, given that his eponymous series and its tone require him to be much more serious. We hear him say “I am the Immortal Iron Fist” a couple of times, but every time he does that both Jessica and Luke Cage look at him as if he were insane. Truth be told, “Iron Fist” series is the least successful out of the four shows previously mentioned, so some people even hoped The Defenders team would be made as a trio, i.e., leaving out Iron Fist. However, it seems that, after all, Iron Fist in this new light still makes a good team member.
Even if some of you were not that satisfied with the first three episodes of the show, we’re sure that changed in the fourth one, when Daredevil’s mentor Stick (played by Scott Glenn) and Sigourney Weaver showed up and spiced things up a little bit.
All in all, the first four episodes of The Defenders Season 1 seem to be promising enough, and there are some hints that the show will bring even more exciting events in the episodes to come. Don’t miss the end of the season to see the team’s ferocious battle against their enemy.
