American alternative-rock band, The Breeders, was formed in 1989 by Kim Deal of Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. Thought the years the group changed its lineup, with Kim Deal being the only standard member. Their first album came out in 1990 under the name Pod. It failed to achieve any commercial success, but despite that, it was critically acclaimed. Last Splash album which came out in 1990 is the most successful The Breeders release to date. It is known for the single named ‘Cannonball.’
Formation of The Breeders
The band was formed when Kim Deal, the bassist of Pixies at the time, started a new project with Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly and Carrie Bradley, violinist, and vocalist in Boston band Ed’s Redeeming Qualities. The three recorded a demo based on materials that Deal wrote during Pixies Surfer Tour in Europe.
They didn’t have a regular drummer for the recording of the demo. David Narcizo, Mickey Bones, and Carl Haarer all participated on the record. At that point, they still didn’t adopt the name Breeders. Instead, they were known as “Boston Girl Super-Group.” They started using the name Breeders only when their demo was well accepted by independent record label 4AD.

Pod (1990–91)
Their first album Pod came out on May 28th, 1990. It was recorded in ten days in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like we mentioned it didn’t bode well with the audience, so it missed on commercial success. But, more importantly, critically it was a complete success. It was so good that Kurt Cobain stated that this was one of his favorite records ever.
Last Splash (1993)
Last Splash was the second album for The Breeders. It came out in 1993 under the Coast Recorders in San Francisco. Three singles from this album were released, with Cannonball receiving the most significant recognition and even featuring on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart on No2. Another single that stands out from this album was the song called No Aloha. After the success of this release, the band became widely acclaimed. They played together with Nirvana and were featured on Lollapalooza.
Title TK (2001–02)
After hiatus that lasted more than five years, the band returned with a studio album called Title TK. The Breeders had new members, guitarist Richard Presley, bass player Mando Lopez, and drummer Jose Medeles. The band also made a documentary film called The Breeders: The Real Deal.
Mountain Battles and Fate to Fatal (2008–10)
In 2008 Kim and Kelley, Jose Medeles, and Mando Lopez released Mountain Battles. The tracks from this album were recorded at Refraze Recording Studio in Dayton, Ohio. Fate to Fatal, on the other hand, was released on April 21st, 2009.
LSXX and All Nerve (2012–present)
In 2012 the band reunited its lineup consisting of Kim and Kelley, Macpherson, and Wiggs. They started a tour to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Last Splash. The tour spanned four continents – North America, Europe, Australia, and South America.
The Breeders released a new single ‘Wait in the car’ on October 3rd, 2017. It was followed by a new album called All Nerve which was published on March 2, 2018.
The band continues working on new projects, and you can follow their development on the Official Breeders website, their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter profiles, and on their YouTube channel.
