Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) already fast car is ready to get even faster. And to make the car speedier, all owners have to do is update their vehicles with an upcoming software update.
Tesla just tweaked its algorithm
Recently, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk confirmed via Twitter that an over-the-air software update, to be available in few days, will improve the acceleration by another 0.1 seconds. Tesla’s Model S P85D already boasts of 0 to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds, and the new update will lower this time further.
“Tesla P85D 0 to 60 mph acceleration will improve by ~0.1 sec soon via over-the-air software update to inverter algorithm,” he said. “P85 acceleration will also improve, but not quite as much.”
Musk told that the P85’s two-motor setup was initially planned for a better grip in uncertain weather conditions, and was never meant for acceleration.
“Tesla dual motor cars are also all-wheel drive,” he added. “[The] main goal of dual motor was actually insane traction on snow. Insane speed was a side effect.”
What’s interesting is that the companies making petrol-powered sports cars can spend considerable amount of time and efforts to find that extra space to improve the cars performance by a fraction of a second. And Tesla, did all that just by tweaking an algorithm, and sending it as a software update. Musk also posted a YouTube video by HighTechJoe to demonstrate the power of P85D’s in snow.
“Insane Mode” button
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) P85D has an inbuilt “Insane Mode” button, which makes the car go 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. Tesla CEO unveiled the new version last October, and it costs $120,000. Excluding the latest software update, the P85D is 0.7 seconds faster than the McLaren F1. The ‘insane mode’ can be activated only when the car is at complete rest.
Recently, DragTimes posted a YouTube video recording the responses and reactions of the passengers experiencing the P85D’s twin-engine ability for the first time. “It’s very safe, the car has all-wheel drive and is very stable the entire time. We’ve even done 0-60 in 3.3 seconds in the rain with no tire spin at all,” told one of the drivers, whose reaction was recorded DragTimes to Mashable.
