Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) will start deliveries of the ambitious Model X in late 2015 to its customers. The Model X offers the benefits of a minivan and the features of a sports utility vehicle. This vehicle will mark its entry into two new segments that are considered both critical as well as overlapping for the auto industry. These two segments are women and SUV buyers, says a report from Mercury News.
Tesla Model X to be female friendly
Though Tesla does not release demographic information about its customers, it has been observed that males are more inclined to buy all-electric Model S sedan. Of all the registrations made for Model S in 2013, 85.8% were made by men, says the report. A tracking record of new vehicle registrations by gender is kept by IHS Automotive that provided the previous information.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) hopes that the trend would change with the new all-electric Model X. Female drivers prefer smaller SUVs and the new Model X has been designed keeping that in mind. During a shareholders meeting in June, CEO Elon Musk was advised by a woman to make the vehicle in such a way that it appeals to females as well.
“We’re certainly paying more attention to the needs of women in the Model X, and I think you’re right, we probably got a little too guy-centric on the S. So, we’re hoping to correct that with the X.” said Musk, who found it a good point.
Many waiting for the car
Lisa Merkord, who is a resident of rural Ventura County, is counting heavily on it. The lady has an 11-year old son, whom she drives to school every morning in her Chevy Volt. She received a pleasant gift on her 52nd birthday last year when her husband reserved the Model X as a surprise gift.
Merkord said she needed to upgrade to an SUV because she needed more space. The school is located 15 miles away, and it becomes difficult for the couple to carry the kids around especially when there are social activities taking place. She said this car is the one and only replacement because it would resolve the problem. She hopes that by September she would receive the car.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) as an automaker, also, is counting on the Model X. In recently, it has been informed that Sedans have declined in popularity and have been replaced by trucks and SUVs informs Edmunds.com.
