For a long time, Marvel Comics fans have been insisting that one of their superheroines, Squirrel Girl (Doreen Green), should get her own TV show. Many even hoped she would be the one to give Marvel Cinematic Universe a comedy flick as successful as Deadpool, or at least nearly successful (an R-rated movie would be too much to expect).
A couple of days ago it was announced that fans’ wishes would finally come true. However, Squirrel Girl will not actually get her own movie, but it will just be a part of a 10-episode series New Warriors, which is slated to air on Freeform, formerly known as ABC Family network. Even though the character won’t get a TV Show for herself exclusively, some think that even the decision to make her a part of the upcoming series is a mistake. What do you say? Here are some reasons why a certain group of people considers this to be the wrong choice.
First of all, we all know that Marvel has always been popular on networks such as Netflix, and we also know that ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter attracted a great number of viewers and were well-received by the audience. But, Freeform is not the type of network which boasts comic book stories, so why choosing it for exactly this genre?
Another reason is the fact that New Warriors is just a half-hour comedy series, so it’s clear there won’t be much room for the storyline to develop in a way fans will most certainly expect it to happen. In addition to this, people believe that choosing Kevin Biegel (Cougar Town) as the showrunner for this type of series was definitely not a good decision.
Finally, if we take into consideration the fact that Squirrel Girl has never been a member of the New Warriors team, it’s not quite clear why she is going to be one now. It appears as if Marvel did this just because they didn’t know what to do with the character, not because they thought she fitted the crew.
