This year’s movie will be just the third big-screen franchise in 15 years, but let’s take a step back. In 1985, Superman was the only huge superhero, and the powerhouse Cannon Films acquired the rights for Spider-Man from Marvel from $250,000. The film rights went to 21st Century Films, then to Carolco Pictures that bankrupted. MGM took over the rights, but because of some problems, a court dismissed MGM’s claim to Spider-Man and Sony Pictures eventually released Spider-Man through Columbia Pictures in 2002.
