Dallas Cowboys will look to make their roster more competitive through free agency in upcoming months. Because of that, there are many players who are rumored to be targeted by Dallas team. You probably heard that Emmanuel Sanders wants to play for Cowboys. But, we are not talking about him.
One of the primary positions that need addressing is the linebacker. America’s Team is lacking depth at linebacker, and one player could fill the void. Yesterday, Kansan City Chiefs announced that they would part ways with 14-year veteran Derrick Johnson. Cowboys current linebackers corps consists of Sean Lee, Jaylon Smith, and Anthony Hitchens, players that deserve a place on the team. Hitchens could leave in free agency and if this happens Johnson would be a right addition.
Of course, Johnson is past his prime at the age of 35. Nonetheless, he played in 15 games last year and recorded 48 solo tackles. A veteran such as him don’t cost too much, so Big D should take a risk with this man.
The reason why he would be interested in playing for Cowboys is the fact that he attended high school in Texas. After finishing Waco High School, he joined the University of Texas. While attending college, he won Bronko Nagurski Trophy which is given to nations top defensive player, and the Butkus Award which goes to the best linebacker.
Johnson was drafted by Kansas City Chiefs back in 2005. He was their first selection at No 15 pick. During 13 season in the league Johnson played in 182 matches and recorded 938 tackles, 27.5 sacks, 14 interceptions with 4 returned for a touchdown, and 78 passes defended.
So, when Derrick Johnson’s contract gets voided on March 14th Cowboys should look to sign him, especially if they part ways with Anthony Hitchens. Yes, Johnson is entering the winter of his career, but Cowboys linebacker unit is craving for a consistent and experienced player. Former 4-time Pro Bowl player Derrick Johnson is precisely that.
