A cutting edge futuristic supercar as Saab’s comeback?
Swedish automakers Saab have never had a proper supercar. Nowadays the company is far behind its rivals. Would a supercar make any difference? One must admit that this carmaker had some high quality and sporty models like 9-3 Viggen and Sonett but what could really bring them back on the scene with the world class automakers? It’s simple, a supercar, to be precise, one called AeroX. New Gray Design concept got us thinking because it shows AI (artificial intelligence) built into the car aside from jet-inspired, futuristic looks.
Gray Design style for the AeroX really stands out from the previous Saabs. The only similar thing is the grille. This concept supercar has a low roof and mid-mounted powertrain. Other than that, screen in the front where you can see messages is a novelty. After a thorough examination, one could assume that this concept found its inspiration in Saab’s aircraft making days rather than in Saab’s auto making ones.
As we have said, this vehicle took notes from Saab’s aircraft making history, and we can see that as movable wings and flaps that improve effectiveness when it comes to aerodynamics were added. As Gray Design stated, it would have deployable panels at the back which can extend at high speeds in order to stabilize the vehicle. Pieces in the front are made to adjust the downforce there with the final result of better handling and improved cornering abilities.
However, we should take this with a grain of salt. Real chances of Saab making a supercar are really small. As the company is managed by the ‘National Electric Vehicle Sweden’ which puts all its focus on breathing life into the 9-3 electric model, there is not much space for a supercar project. In addition to that, the company stated in January this year that China’s ‘Panda New Energy’ ordered 15,000 electric vehicles which imply that the production of those should start at least before the end of 2017. Unfortunately, that leaves no room for a supercar, maybe it could be one of the future projects.
We’ve known Saab for being a unique brand. The fanbase is smaller nowadays, but they are still there because there is no doubt that Saab had produced some fine cars. It’s really a pity that they were passed along ever since General Motors bought them. Spyker also tried to revive the company and make them a fierce rival on the market, but they failed as well. Finally, NEVS picked up the fallen giant, but there are no signs of better days yet.
To add salt to the wound, NEVS is not allowed to even use the name ‘Saab’ for their cars because of the complex ownership deal. The company is owned by two factions: The NEVS and a certain defense contractor. This is a legal catch 22. The aircraft maker forbids the use of the trademark due to the automaker firm’s financial troubles.
