When we talk about the best Tight Ends to ever play the game, we need to insert Jason Witten in the conversation. He has been able to have a hall of fame type of a career as he is durable and reliable. Whenever Tony Romo needed to make a clutch pass for new first down or a TD, his insurance policy was always Jason Witten. Now, the tight end is getting up there in age, and he will soon have to call it a career.
But, one Cowboys’ players feels that the team shouldn’t worry about that as he thinks that he is the next Jason Witten. He is Rico Gathers, a guy that spent the year on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
“I felt like toward the end of the year I was ready to be on the roster, and I felt like I should have been on the roster. This year is the year to come out and take over and show Rico Gathers is the heir apparent to Jason Witten. That’s how I feel honestly.”
Gathers played basketball at Baylor and was a legit athlete as he averaged over 11 points in his senior year. He is a big body, a 6 foot 6 and 281 pounds. He spent last year learning the game of pro football, which includes both blocking and being active in the pass-catching game. He was learning the offense and a route tree.
There is no doubt about the fact that this kid is talented, but it will take a lot of hard work from him to succeed one day and to be one of the best players on the Dallas Cowboys. Big words from a big guy and we are sure that all Cowboys fans hope for this to come true at least to some extent.
