Bearing in mind that Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Season 1 ended with a major cliffhanger, we may say that the second season of the series is simply necessary. There are many questions which remained unanswered, for example, what will happen with the blue-haired demon maid, a character that eventually attracted more attention than Emilia herself?
The writers of the popular anime series wanted to present Emilia as the main heroine of Re:Zero, but, somehow, Rem, a demon maid, sometimes referred to as the “blue-haired ogre,” managed to become most fans’ favorite character.
This conclusion can be supported by the results of a recent poll which was carried out in order to see who will find the way to the top three anime characters. Believe it or not, in the end, Emilia was not among the three. According to Crunchyroll, Rem “won by a landslide,” as more than 50 percent of the participants chose her as their favorite one, while Ram and Beatrice made it to the second and the third place. Some people believe that the reason for such turn of events lies in the fact that Emilia’s character is not as developed as that of either of the twin maids.
When it comes to Re:Zero Season 2, most of the original characters are expected to be there again, including Ram, Subaru, Roswaal, Beatrice, Puck, and, of course, Emilia. As you have probably noticed, Rem is not on this list. Namely, some sources suggest that her rising popularity is making it much more difficult for the producers to draw attention to Emilia, which is why they might write her off.
You might not know this, but the anime creator Tappei Nagatsuki actually often refers to Rem as “Sleeping Princess” and soon it will be clear why. After Subaru’s return, Rem dies, and the only way to bring her back is to kill Gluttony, but even Felix and Wilhelm are not completely sure about this method, so we can say that the chances for her return are rather poor.
