This week’s big Thursday Night Football matchup might be the one that determines the future of Bills’ head coach Rex Ryan as he prepares his team to face his former one, the New York Jets.
Ryan was unable to make the Playoffs in the last five seasons, and if his team plays like they did against the Baltimore Ravens, it’s highly unlikely that Bills will even sniff the postseason football. And that’s a shame because Ryan has a really good football squad at his disposal.
Bills’ front seven is one of the best in the league. Rex has proved to be one of the best defensive minds in the NFL as he led the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games. He did have some success with the Jets, but now his future might depend on him beating his former squad.
Buffalo is just 8-9 under Rex Ryan, and that just won’t cut it in a city that is starving for NFL success and for a franchise that wants to get back to the top of NFL. They want to relive that success that they had in the 90s.
You can argue that Rex was not even a good fit here. This defense was good even before he came in. Bills always needed to get better on the offensive side of the ball as that was their main problem before they hired Rex. If his offense and his team don’t improve on Thursday, at home, against his former team, and wind up on the losing side yet again, that just might be the nail in the coffin for Rex.
And, ironically, the Jets might be the one to put that nail in the coffin of their former head coach.
