Bill Goldberg won the Universal Title in one of the shortest WWE championship matches in recent memory. Now, Goldberg has wrestled just a bit over 100 seconds in total and has hit a total of five moves in two duels. Three spears and two jackhammers. That was enough for a 50-year old part timer to win the title over one of the main young stars that the company has.
There are a couple of reasons behind the decision for this fight to last as long, or as short, as it did. One of the reasons was the fear that Goldberg and Owens would have a bad match if it lasted longer. Even in his prime, Goldberg was not known as a great performer, and the company still doesn’t believe that he can wrestle for an extended period of time and have a good performance. It’s really questionable what is he going to do with Lesnar at Wrestlemania 33.
Another reason is the fact that WWE didn’t want to risk and injury to Goldberg heading into the biggest event of the year. WWE is going to build the show around Lesnar facing Bill Goldberg, and they don’t want to risk an injury to Goldberg and have that show being canceled.
Vince McMahon also doesn’t want Goldberg to show a lot of moves at Fastlane as this is a B-level pay per view. He wants him to save everything he has for the match at the grandest stage of them all with Brock Lesnar. It’s going to be interesting to see if Bill and Lesnar have at least a 10-minute match at Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando.
