Running back position is somewhat undervalued in today’s NFL, but it shouldn’t be. You are able to control the clock if you have a good running game and it also opens up the passing game. Let’s see which teams of the four left have the best running back units.
4. Ty Montgomery, Green Bay Packers – Eddy Lacy went down early in the season, James Starks is also not available, so Packer had to turn one of their wideouts into running back. Montgomery is the guy that has been running the ball for them, and he alone has been a respectable threat in this segment.
3. LaGerrette Blount/Dion Lewis/James White – New England Patriots – Blount is the guy that is getting those tough yards and goal line looks, while Lewis enters the match when Patriots want an explosive runner and a threat in the passing game. White is usually there as a threat in the passing game out of the backfield. Together, they are a pretty good unit.
2. Le’Veon Bell – Pittsburgh Steelers – This man is the best running back in the NFL. His poise, patience and playmaking ability are all of the charts. He is explosive, so when he sees the opening, he hits that hole pretty quickly and is gone. If he needs to juke out defenders, he can do that as well. Bell is the first running back in NFL history to average over 100 yards running and 50 yards in the passing game. Straight up beast.
1. Devonta Freeman/Tevin Coleman – Atlanta Falcons – This two-headed attack in the backfield that the Falcons have has been sensational this year. Both of these guys are good enough to start on an NFL team. Both of them are aggressive runners, with Devonta Freeman used more in a running game, while Tevin Coleman has been utilized in the passing actions. These two are capable of being the difference makers on any given Sunday.
