The well known, red-clothed, mustachioed tubby Italian has always been known as working in the plumbing business. However, Nintendo’s Japanese website recently updated their profile and presented that that is not the case.
This was written according to a translation given by Kotaku: “All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool.” It also said: “As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”
When you get to think of it, we’ve never actually seen Mario do any plumbing. It seems that he got that job just because he was underground most of the time. The people who created him said that once they decided that he was going to be a plumber, the following story behind his character ensued, as the fact that he lives in New York and that he is Italian.
This is not the only revelation that was recently found out about this character. Last year, it was explained by Mario’s creators that he was only 24 or 25 years old. It was a shock that he was not a middle-aged man as it was assumed by many people.
As a matter of fact, the creator Shigeru Miyamoto explained that Nintendo was making sure to state only the character’s age. The reason for that is that the other information and details about Mario could change in line with the games.
Even his plumbing profession has been liable to change, for example. On Mario’s first appearance in Donkey Kong from 1981, he was only known as “Jumpman” and only described as “basically a carpenter” because the location of the game was a building site, said Mr. Miyamoto.
