Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is strictly watching the consumer market with each of its product launches. The proven success of the latest version of its tablet form-factor devices Surface Pro 3 has apparently lead to predecessor versions being axed. At the top of the liability list is the Surface 2.
Surface 2 Faces the Axe
According to a statement by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface 2 is being laid to rest as the Windows operating system maker, brings an end to a legacy platform it once made, the RT version. Windows RT will now be confined to technology text book’s perhaps, as the Surface 2 was one of the last of MSFTs own stable products to be using Windows RT. Other OEMs which had once favored Windows RT have, for long given up on it, with only Surface 2 remaining.
The announcement thus puts an end to an era of Windows RT devices.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) forward-looking Operating System version, the Windows 10, at the time of announcement in January had not mentioned options for Surface 2, indicative of the devices’ termination.
Surface 2 was a tablet-bloomer
In many ways, when the Surface 2 was launched it was more of a desperate attempt by Microsoft to keep up with the technology revolution at its height in 2013. The tablet form factor was already expanding customer base, but Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) lacked variety, with the exception of the high and pricey first version Surface tablet.
Surface 2 with Windows RT was launched as a strategic product during that period. Now, with RT platform not supported by hardware makers, sadly the RT appears to have outlasted its need. Surface 2 devices are already out of stock on the company’s own web store. As MSFT dithers with its Windows 10 version it does appear a stiff march ahead for Microsoft devices!
