Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has confirmed that it is ending support for Windows Phone Rooms service that has failed to live up to expectations. Upon launching Rooms in 2012, the software giant had hoped that the extension would make much of the splash in terms of attracting more users to share photos, notes among many more on private groups.
Support for Rooms will be ended as Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shifts its attention to Windows 10 which is to come with new services that it hopes will allow it, stay in touch with users. Under the new changes, Windows 8 users will be able to view their existing rooms but won’t be able to add new ones starting March.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) maintains that users will still be able to access photo albums, as well as calendars and notes on their windows phone even with the ending of support. Users can do this by use of Outlook.com or OneDrive on the web.
Microsoft also affirms that rooms will entirely be removed for those who upgrade to the new Windows 10 Technical Preview for Phones. When the preview version was unveiled last week, it lacked the Rooms confirming it would not make it into the next version of Windows. Although the move to end support for the Rooms feature is to be a big disappointment to users who were using it; it is still the best move going forward.
The usability of the Rooms feature was limited to people using Windows phone, which is in contrast to Microsoft push to have its products well accessible to a variety of platforms. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) already runs GroupMe messaging platform the meets the billing of cross-platform functionality thus did not make a lot of sense to retain Rooms that was limited. It waits to be seen how Microsoft plans to bake its messaging service for Windows 10.
