Lamborghini will start with the production of its new SUV called Urus in April this year. It will be a new luxury high-performance model that will be made in about 3,500 units a year and thus almost double the combined annual deliveries of the brand. The exotic Italian car maker is working on the expansion of their factory which is located in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy so that they could produce the Urus, without affecting the production of other vehicles.
Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Lamborghini talked to Digital Trends about the new SUV, which will be the spiritual successor of the LMOO2. Domenicali confirmed the Urus name, but the more details will be known in the upcoming days. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the Urus will be in production from April this year, which indicates that we will see the final version at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March.
Domenicali told Digital Trends: “I would say that in regard to the SUV, you will learn a lot of things in the next couple of weeks. The name is for sure Urus. Production will start in April, though the plant will initially build pre-series models. As you know, this is an entirely new process so the first few cars will be prototypes. It’s a very delicate period, which is why 2017 will be a very important year for us. Don’t underestimate the big step we’re taking.”
According to the R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani the new Lamborghini Urus is supposed to be the fastest and the most powerful SUV in the world. He said this a year ago, and now Domenicali revealed that the new Urus will feature “a specific setup for ice, snow, stones and sand,” implying that it wouldn’t be designed for the asphalt only. A plug-in hybrid version was confirmed as well and once produced it should be the first PHEV coming out of Lamborghini’s factory.
