Rumors about Keijo: Hip Whip Girl suggested that the Season 2 was not going to happen because the poor anime Blue-Ray sales which caused the Keijo manga to be canceled. But is this true or not? Well, there is some truth to this, but it is not entirely correct.
The series was popular and the move to cancel the second season surprised the fans. On MyAnimeList, Keijo earned a 7.37 score, whereas it was the second-best anime during the 2016 fall season right behind Yuri on Ice, according to the Japanese fans. On the other hand, the sales of the Keijo Blue-Ray Volume 1 disc were miserable in Japan, and reportedly only 715 examples were sold. The sales in the first week were closer to 1,025 according to an estimate from December last year, but Keijo manga author Daichi Sorayomi contested these numbers by saying that “Keijo’s sales were closer to 7,000 than 700 as previously reported.”
Based on the pattern that has been established, an anime needs around 3,000 sales in the first week to guarantee the second season, but recently, the international streaming rights have become a major source of revenue and not the disc sales. Keijo in China has received the rating of 8.7, and it is watched by millions. We need to mention that the Keijo Blue-Ray disc was costly – $70 for two episodes – and you would need $420 for the entire first season, which is not a small amount of money.
This post from Sorayomi went viral on Yaraon, but before you read it, you should know that it was fake. Still, it spread like wildfire. Here it is: “I’m very sorry to write this, but the timeline was not on my side. You see, the editor came to me last week and informed myself to increase the popularity of Keijo!!! This is not something you can do overnight. I was lost for words, as I believed we were doing fine in rankings. Today, I was informed by my editor that my manga is being removed due to the poor reception of the anime.”
“The anime failed to make an impact, for advertising purposes, and the studio is carrying that loss because of it. It is my fault, and I am sorry. The source material should have been better, and I’ve done a great burden. I was actually very surprised by the reception overseas. In various conversations, I was told it was greatly talked about in America. I’m glad some of you enjoyed it, but I’m sorry once again for failing. My sincere apologies to Takahashi-san and XEBEC.”
According to Sorayomi, the decision to finish with the Keijo manga was made even before the first season was aired at all. They planned to finish the whole story once Keijo episode 12 was released in December last year. In the meantime, Weekly Shonen Sunday published Keijo manga at the back pages, and this is the place of the least popular mangas. Sorayomi disagreed with this, and he believed that its manga should be placed at the front while the anime was airing. Unfortunately, the magazine was forced to end the manga even before he realized what was going to happen further on.
However, Sorayomi blamed himself and the issues which he had with his publisher Shogakukan. Author said that he couldn’t do everything by himself, so he asked for an assistant to help him, but the publisher was unable to provide any help. This forced Sorayomi to put extra effort, and on one occasion he worked so hard that he passed out from exhaustion.
The poor sales numbers were also explained. The anime studio XEBEC confirmed that the Oricon estimates were incorrect, but Sorayomi said that the anime lacked sponsors which meant that it was not broadcasted in all regions of Japan including the entire western area. In his blog, Sorayomi wrote:
“I really appreciate the readers who read it to the end. Thank you very much! And thanks to the director who worked hard despite the difficult circumstances. To the animation staff, public relations people, and voice actors who finished working on this interesting anime: thank you! I really only have a feeling of gratitude and I was able to work hard during the second half because I saw everyone’s best effort.”
Keijo Manga – Chapters Exist For Season 2
You might have heard that there isn’t enough material for Keijo: Hip Whip Girl Season 2, but that is just another false rumor. The anime ended at about Chapter 90, which is contained in the first half of Keijo Volume 10. Unfortunately, there are no official English translations of the manga, but you can find the unofficial ones at fan sites.
The anime begins when Nozomi and Sayaka come to school to meet Kazane and Non. You should know that the first 35 chapters of the manga are skipped and if you want to read it, don’t omit the beginning. Furthermore, you will discover more about Nozomi’s family which has been non-existent in the anime. Volume 18 of Keijo manga was published in July this year, which means that there are more than 177 chapters, leaving about 87 for the second season. In fact, about 4.5 chapters are covered per one episode, suggesting that two more seasons that consist of 10 episodes can be made. However, the fans are disappointed by the ending, but it wasn’t Sorayomi’s fault either because he wasn’t allowed to complete the story the way he wanted to.
Keijo Season 2 Release Date
Nothing is official, but there are rumors about the season 2 of Keijo. XEBEC released BanG Dream! In 2017 alongside Clockwork Planet. The studio is currently working on Full Metal Panic! Season 4. They have a busy schedule, meaning that the Keijo Season 2 will not be in production until 2018 and this is the best possible scenario. If that is the case, the anime will be released sometime in 2019. Since XEBEC is working on the other projects, this is probably not going to happen, and fans will have to be patient for the new season of Keijo: Hip Whip Girl.
Keijo Season 2 Spoilers
Nozomi won the East-West War tournament by defeating Maya Sakashiro, and this was the last time she was seen. Fans also had a chance to see the spoiler, Beach-Kun. He is holding two fingers in the air, could it be that he represents the Season 2? Oh yes, he is just a minor character.
Nozomi has graduated from school, and she is supposed to become a Keijo pro for the first time. However, she has problems with her chest area and rehabilitating Nozomi’s primary assets is a small story arc comprised of two chapters. The anime ending also hints at the second season by showing Sumire Sakuragi for a moment, a major character seen on the cover of Keijo Volume 10. She is known as the Ice Mistress, and the tricks she uses can freeze her opponents in fear. She becomes a mentor to both Sayak Miyata and Nozomi, who realized she needed one after she had not followed Sumire’s advice during her Debut War.
Later in the story, the “Unlimited Panty” is mentioned, and it is basically an enhanced swimsuit which gives Keijo players an advantage, and it is considered illegal in a race. The rest of the season 2 will follow Nozomi after she challenges one of the Five Butts. Her declaration of war is ignored, but she enters an East tournament to boost her ranking from B to A.
