The Dallas Cowboys drafted Xavier Woods as the 191st overall pick which means that 31 NFL teams allowed Dallas to do that. When the Cowboys landed Woods, a safety out of Louisiana Tech, everyone was happy, because he was a steal. We are still not sure how he fell to the sixth round.
Dallas completely changed the secondary line during the offseason, and most of the defenders, such as Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox walked away and found new homes. We are not too sad that Wilcox left because Xavier Woods is a younger and better version of J.J., plus his contract is cheaper not damaging the cap of the team all that much.
At the preseason game in Los Angeles, Xavier Woods jarred a fumble out, and Kavon Frazier recovered it. However, the officials reviewed the play and said that it was an incomplete catch. Despite that, Xavier proved that he could be a great and aggressive player which we desperately need to see on the Cowboys’ roster. He did that on a daily basis while he played at Louisiana Tech and hopefully will continue doing it in NFL.
Last season, Dallas snatched another great player in the sixth round – Anthony Brown? Could the tradition continue with Xavier Woods?
The first preseason game showed that Dallas was going to have problems with the secondary when the season starts. However, that changed slightly in the LA game, and the safeties such as Woods, Kavon Frazier, Jeff Heath and Byron Jones looked solid. If you want to be crafty, you could assign rookie Chidobe Awuzie to that position.
From the very beginning, the hype and excitement about Xavier Woods have been real, and this doesn’t often happen for a six-round player. Will Woods live up to the expectations? It remains to be seen, but we hope he will have a solid rookie season to start with.
