As you already know by now, from various posts we made on the topic, the production of Deadpool 2 is set to start this June, and its cast lineup is nearing completion. Just recently we had our favorite star/producer Ryan Reynolds confirming that that Zazie Beetz is aboard as Domino, while latest reports discovered that both Michael Shannon and Brad Pitt are still in a “run” for the role of Cable.
On the promotion of their new sci-fi thriller Life, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were asked, and they revealed that they’re finalizing the shooting draft of the screenplay, as well as testing a potential cameo from Hugh Jackman who is so unconventional and crazy that it just might work.
They were also asked, by The Hollywood Reporter, how hard it is to write and finish the script for a movie that still doesn’t have a release date set? Here is what Rhett Reese said about the sequel script, and his writing process: “We’re very close to a draft that we’ll go off and shoot in a couple of months and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We don’t want to put the cart before the horse, and often times with release dates that happens. You end up racing and you end up being forced to do something you’re not happy with and the great thing about Deadpool is we spent a career trying to duck other movies.”
He continued: “How do we get off the release date of this or that? I think in most cases, people are going to have to duck us. Fox is probably going to be able to drop that thing on a date and everyone else is going to scatter, because no one will want to come out the same weekend, our feeling is it’s all about the movie. The fact that Deadpool came out in February and did as well as it did, and you are seeing similarly the summer [movie season] start earlier in March, and movies succeed in October and so the date to us doesn’t mean as much as it used to. I think the studio feels the same way. We just want to make the best movie possible and Deadpool will find an audience, we feel at this point”
Since this cameo from Hugh Jackman was announced, we can tell you that many fans were hoping for a cameo in the original movie, but since that didn’t happen, we will settle for one in the sequel (if it actually happens at all). If you recall, in the first installment of the Deadpool our lead character often referenced Hugh Jackman himself, and his Wolverine character, while, at one point, he stapled a cutout of Hugh Jackman’s face to his forehead, in order to fill a gap of Jackman’s cameo. One thing saddens us, and it is a fact that Jackman recently, repeatedly, stated that the current blockbuster Logan will be his final performance as Wolverine, so this cameo couldn’t come at a worse time.
But as we found out The Hollywood Reporter journalist, Aaron Couch, had an idea which he pitched to the writers and it was to give Hugh Jackman a cameo as himself. Here is what Reese had to say on that: “Oh my gosh, that’s one we haven’t heard. That’s not a bad idea. I like that. Deadpool lives in a world where Hugh Jackman is out there. He’s got the People’s Se*iest Man Alive cover that he staples to his forehead in the first movie, so maybe he could meet Hugh as Hugh. That would be really funny.”
As you recall the Deadpool star, Reynolds, also teased an idea of making a movie about Deadpool vs. Wolverine, but since Jackman is retired from the role that will have to wait. Hugh, on the other hand, hinted that he might be interested in coming back to revisit the character sometime later, but for now, he is done. Maybe that Deadpool vs. Wolverine thing actually happens in a few years or so. Who knows?!
