Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) apparently failed to yield to the demands of the hackers who attacked its entertainment arm, Sony Pictures. According to details from some of the leaked documents, the attackers of Sony Pictures sought monetary compensation from Sony executives, The Verge stated in an article. The hackers threatened to bring Sony down if their demand was not met. Sony didn’t comply with the demand for monetary compensation, and the attackers made good their threat as they compromised Sony Pictures system and made away with sensitive data and information.
Extortionist hackers
The extortion email was sent to executives at Sony Pictures including Chairman Amy Pascal and CEO, Michael Lynton. The hackers made their demand three days before they carried out what has turned out to be a catastrophic attack on the system of Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE).
However, it is also emerging that the executives at Sony may not have read the emails that warned them about an imminent attack on their system. The failure to read the email or to make monetary compensation to the hackers eventually invited the attacks.
The Interview
The attacks on the system of Sony Pictures have been linked to North Korea, a state that is said to employ many hackers. Such claims have also been given some credence by the non-native English used in the extortion emails sent to Sony executives ahead of the attack. North Korea expressed outrage over a new film known as The Interview. The film is about a plot to assassinate Kim Jong-Un, the supreme leader of North Korea.
PlayStation hitch
Meanwhile, the attacks on Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s system appear to be escalating as hitches were also reported on PlayStation network. Users were unable to access the store for some hours before the company announced that the issue had been fixed.
Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) said the cause of the hitch at PlayStation store was under investigation. However, the company said there were no indications that any materials were stolen n the suspected attack on PlayStation system.
