When John Cena first came into the WWE, he was a heel. His rapper gimmick became pretty popular, and it is what enabled him to rise to the top. He did have a lot of charisma, and his delivery was always on point. The fans started to like what they have seen from Cena, so the company pulled a trigger on his face turn.
That was the best move for this guy as he had a meteoric rise to the top of the ladder after that had happened. John was the most popular guy in the company for a couple of years, but the WWE became a bit lazy when it comes to their biggest star. They started booking him the same every single night, overcoming impossible odds and being a super human. After a while, the fans got tired of him.
Half of the fans, mostly children and women were still cheering for Cena, but a lot of the other fans booed him since they realized that the company tried to push him down fans throats. The same thing that they are now doing with Roman Reigns. In a recent interview, Cena talked about how he feels about never actually turning heel.
While he does realize why the fans wanted him to turn, he also knows that he still had a lot of fans that like him just the way he is. When most of them are kids, you can’t just make their hero a bad guy.
“I don’t think everyone wants me to turn. There is a group of people that don’t like what they see, but the most important message I send is you can’t please everybody, never be ashamed to be who you are, and know that what you do affects people.”
He realizes that fans come to watch WWE in order to escape from reality and because they love it. That’s why Cena is still showing up on WWE TV each and every year.
