Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) introduced a prototype tablet with 3D motion and depth sensing capabilities under its Project Tango, one of the initiatives of the search engine giant that aims to provide mobile devices with human scale understanding of space and motion.
According to the search engine giant, its Project Tango Development Kit was created in close collaboration with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA). The development kits costs $1,024, which is composed of the new Tegra 1 mobile processor to create a platform designed for computer vision and 3D sensing.
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOG) said developers can use the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit to create applications that track full 3-dimensional motion and capture surfaces in the environment. The search engine giant said the development kit will be available for sale by the end of the year.
Project Tango is part of the Advanced Technology Projects (ATAP) of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Johnny Lee, a human-interaction researcher and a technical lead at the search engine giant is among those working on Project Tango.
Earlier this year, the Project Tango team released a smartphone prototype with capabilities similar to the prototype table. Developers already receive their Project Tango smartphone prototypes and are currently creating applications to help the search engine giant push the technology.
“We are still in the early days as this technology starts to transition out of the research labs into the hands of millions of people. While we may believe we know where it may go, history suggests we should be humble in our opinions. We are excited to see the road ahead of us take shape with each step forward,” as written on Project Tango’s website.
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has another project under ATAP called Project Ara, which is focused on revolutionizing the smartphone industry by going modular. The ATAP team aims to develop an affordable smartphone that can be assembled and customized in numerous configurations. The target price of the Project Ara modular smartphone is $50.
