In 1998, Wilder teamed up with an oncologist, Steven Piper. They worked on a book Gilda’s Disease, which documented the struggles of his life with his former wife, Gilda Radner, who had cancer at the time. Next year, Wilder disclosed that he was hospitalized with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After chemotherapy and stem cell transplant, Wilder said in 2005 that he is in complete remission.
In 2005, he published his first personal memoir, Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love and Art. Later in 2007, he published his following book, My French Whore, which is set in WWI.
