Former NFL wide receiver Terry Glenn died in the traffic accident as he was driving near Dallas. With him in the car was his fiancée who escaped the accident with light injuries. Glenn, who had his first touchdown in 2001 on a pass by Tom Brady with the New England Patriots was 43 years old.
Glenn was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, but he succumbed to injuries before 1 a.m., according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office. Meanwhile, police department spokeswoman Chelsey Jones said that the Irving police is on eastbound Highway 114, investigating what caused the accident. Authorities confirmed that Glenn, a former Ohio star was driving when the accident happened and that the vehicle struck a concrete barrier and rolled over. In this havoc, Glenn was ejected out of the car.
At least his fiancée, whose name remains anonymous suffered minor injuries only, whereas Jones is not sure whether they had seatbelts on. Terry Glenn had a rich career, and his first great acknowledgment came when he was in college. In 1995, this man won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top college receiver since he ended the season with 1,411 yards and 17 touchdowns with Ohio State. In the NFL, Glenn played the total of 12 seasons from 1996 to 2007. During his career, he changed three teams, spending first six years with the New England Patriots, five years with Dallas Cowboys and one year with the Green Bay Packers. He retired with 44 touchdowns and 8,823 receiving yards.
Glenn was drafted by the Patriots as the seventh pick in 1996 when Bill Parcells was the head coach. In his rookie year, Glenn proved his value by catching 90 passes in total, but unfortunately for him, the Patriots lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl. Glenn’s first TD was a 21-yard catch as the Patriots came up with the victory over San Diego in the overtime. That was the year when Brady replaced Drew Bledsoe who was injured, and he led the Pats to the Finals. Today, Brady is still playing, and he has won 5 titles.
However, Glenn’s career started rolling downhill since he was absent from squad practices and meetings, so the team had to suspend him. Glenn had issues off-the-field with the mother of his 5-year-old son, but the women recanted the charges.
New England coach Bill Belichick said: “I was pretty close with Terry. I think he was, deep down inside a good person with good intentions and a good heart.”
The last stop for Glen was the America’s Team – The Dallas Cowboys. He had seven touchdowns a year with 1,136 yards in 2005. Five years later, his off-field problems continued, and he was taken into custody for auto theft in Irving. His attorney explained that it was a car rental mix-up. Moreover, one year before that, Glenn was arrested because of the use of illegal substances in an Irving hotel room.
“Terry was someone that we all enjoyed very much in his time with the Cowboys,” owner Jerry Jones said. “He was a gentle and kindhearted young man. Too young and too soon.”
Between the two teams, Glenn spent one year with the Packers. “Terry was one of the most gifted receivers we have ever had,” New England owner Bob Kraft said. “For so many Patriots fans, his rookie season will be remembered as one of the most impactful in franchise history.”
Meanwhile, Drew Bledsoe, former NE quarterback wrote on social media: “Loved this man. My son asked me a decade ago who my favorite receiver ever was because he wanted that jersey for Christmas. He got a Terry Glenn jersey from Santa. TG overcame horrible adversity to become a really good man. May your soul rest in peace my friend.”
