Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is still the king of the social network industry with 71% market share among adult users in the United States, according to the latest survey released by the Pew Research Center. Last year, the social network giants’ market share was 67%.
Data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project showed that 73% of users in the United States with the age above 18 years old are using social networks. Researchers polled 1,801 adults from August 7 to September 16 this year.
Although Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) remained the most popular social network, the study found that 42% of the respondents use a few social networking sites. Thirty six percent (36%) use only one platform while 22% did not use any including Linkedln Corp (NYSE:LNKD), Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), Pinterest of Instagram.
The study also showed that the percentage of adults using Linkedln Corp (NYSE:LNKD) was 22%, followed by Pinterest 20%, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) 18%, and Instagram 17%. According to the survey, the majority users of Linkedln are college graduates and those with higher income households. The primary users of Pinterest are female while Twitter and Instagram are appealing to young adults, urban dwellers, and non-Caucasians.
In terms of engagement level, the survey found the 63% of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) users visit the website at least once a day and 40% visit several times per day. The social network giant’s Instagram ranked second with 57% of its users visit the platform once per day and 35% check their pages multiple times a day. Forty six percent (46%) Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) users log in to their accounts once per day, and 29% a few times a day.
According the survey, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is attracting a significant number of users aged 65 or older. The number of users from these age group rose from 35% last year to 45% in 2013. Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) and Instagram are becoming increasing popular among African-Americans ages 18 to 29 years.
The Pew Research Center did not include Google+, YouTube, Tumblr, Reddit, and Vine in this survey. These social network platforms were included in a separate survey that focused on getting news.
