When it comes to Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, a few questions pop up – what if the greatest running back in the history of the team is the guy who is currently the team’s running back? Could we be witnessing a true Cowboys legend in the early stage of his career?
There is the fact that the Cowboys’ great Emmitt Smith is not only the top rusher in franchise history, but he’s the NFL’s all-time leading rusher as well. But there is another fact to this, and it says that this all happened early in Smith’s career and that Tony Dorsett played for this team as well and that he was the second all-time leading rusher in the NFL at that moment, trailing only Walter Payton.
Ezekiel Elliott is a very lovable guy, but he also has some useful traits like speed, toughness, decision-making – this guy basically has got all the tools. And the premium draft pick used on a running back by Dallas was a full hit! But since we mentioned Emmitt Smith we should say something additional on his behalf. The biggest battle, when favorite running backs topic pops up, that is somehow always present is Barry Sanders vs. Emmitt Smith. In this comparison, a Cowboys fan would have a hard time not being bias, but when you consider the big picture you will see that although he is not the fastest, nor the toughest, and he doesn’t have the “stop on a dime” cuts that Sanders had, Smith does so many other things extremely well. He is a player that can get you one yard on third and inches, and he can catch passes out of the backfield and block in pass protection. He can also elude defenders and break off big runs, and no one must not forget his great resilience.
All in all, we will see a lot more football being played before this article catches any true meaning, but it wasn’t bad to bring this up at this point. We are well aware that this will draw a lot of comments and head turning, but all of that is welcome. Comment below and tell us what you think, and who is your favorite running back of all time?!
