Much to all Empire fans’ delight, the series has been confirmed to be renewed for another season. Gary Newman, Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO broke the news at the Television Critics Association press tour, while David Madden, one of the Fox executives, revealed that the new season will comprise a total of 18 episodes.
Created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, this musical drama series became highly popular soon after the first season release, and it remained on a list of the biggest hit TV Shows in the past decade, so the news about its renewal for (at least) one more season came as no surprise. It would actually be more surprising if the network even considered canceling it after it had become the top broadcast drama among its target audience (adults 18-49). After the first half of Season 3, Empire had around 8 million viewers for the mid-season finale, while the total number of viewers for the season 2016-2017 reached the unbelievable 16 million, making this drama Fox’s show with “largest total multi-platform audience.”
Another evidence that supports the claim that Empire is such a successful project is the fact that the series has already received numerous nominations for different awards (Golden Globe, Emmy, and Grammy). In addition to this, Taraji P. Henson, one of the show’s main stars won the Critics Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Television Series Drama category.
Other cast members (besides Henson) include Jussie Smollett, Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, Terrence Howard, Gabourey Sidibe, Ta’Rhonda Jones, together with famous guest stars, such as Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Naomi Campbell, Chris Rock, etc.
