We all wanted it to be true. The 2020 presidential election could have been special. However, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson decided not to run for president of the United States, despite widespread support.
Johnson said at the New York premiere of Skyscraper on Tuesday: “Unfortunately I don’t see it happening in 2024. It’s a position that requires years of hard work and experience to learn the skills. There’s a lot of ground to cover, and due to my schedule, it’s not possible in 2024. I have so much respect for the position. It’s something that I seriously considered. What I need is time to go out and learn.”
And we all know that Dwayne is busy. Wrestler-turned-actor is expected to start shooting Disney’s Jungle Cruise where he will share the screen with Emily Blunt. Moreover, he and his Fast and Furious buddy Jason Statham are going to work on the first franchise spin-off called Hobbs and Shaw. Recently, The Rock has announced that they plan to make a Jumanji sequel, which will debut on Christmas next year. The long-anticipated standalone film Black Adam is also expected to come in the near future and DJ will play the famous villain.
We don’t want you to think that Skyscraper star was only teasing us and that he never meant to run for president. His friend Hiram Garcia said that ever since the idea appeared after the 2016 presidential election, Johnson has never wanted this president thing to help him with the publicity. He is just not that kind of guy.
“People called for Dwayne to run for president, and as that sentiment started to build up, he really started to respond to it and seriously thought about it,” said Garcia, president of Seven Bucks Productions—Johnson’s production company. “Dwayne really does care about the people, and he has great respect for the position that it requires and holds. Whenever we talk about him running for president, he’s very aware of the position and knows what is required of it, and he doesn’t like to speak loosely about it ’cause he respects the job, and respects the people and what it took to get there.”
Garcia was asked whether Johnson considered wrapping up his acting career in order to venture into politics. He wouldn’t be the first to do so. Previous politicians who used to be in the entertainment industry were Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jesse Ventura. However, Garcia remained neutral. This is what she said: “You never know what will happen with Dwayne. Nothing is impossible for him. But right now, he’s very happy doing what he’s doing, ’cause he knows he can serve the people very well in this position of performing and entertaining.”
Jumanji: Wellcome To The Jungle star may have put his potential career in politics on hold. But we will keep seeing the famous actor in the future. He is still one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, and in whichever movie he appears, you know that it will be the box office hit. Also, he still has his fans to worry about – all 109 million followers on Instagram.
This is what The Rock has to say: “When it’s all said and done, I would like to hope I was known as a good father who put in the work to get better as a father and also put in the work to get better as a man. I hope I was a great business partner to everyone that I did business with and known for not playing dirty. A handshake and a look in the eye is very important to me, even above a contract—even though we have to get the contract signed!”
In the end, Johnson added: “I hope I will be known as a guy who always tried to find the best in scenarios, even challenging scenarios. I’m constantly always looking for the optimistic side of things—and always looking for a great dirty joke.”
President or no, we will always love and respect Dwayne Johnson for everything he represents! However, we have to say that we are disappointed that we will not see him in the race.
