News About Moana
The Rock will play the role of Maui, a sidekick to Moana. Be that as it may, there has been some controversy lately because some people believe the Polynesian stereotypes have been promoted through his character.
However, earlier this summer some people thought that Maui is overweight instead of being strong. Yahoo News published an article in which we can see Maui in his Halloween Costume which Disney had to remove after some Pacific Islanders compared the costume to ‘blackface’ for Polynesians. Later in the article, it is said by a native Hawaiian college student that the costume doesn’t celebrate the culture or a person, but it makes fun of it.
The company stated:”The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some. We sincerely apologize and are pulling the costume from our website and stores.”
