While he was running for a president of the USA, Donald Trump has committed himself to many things, and one of them was bringing back Apple production from China to America. In one of his interviews with the New York Times has revealed his intentions regarding the matter. Trump confirmed to have been talking to Tim Cook on the phone, and it seems that they have reached some kind of agreement.
I got a call from Tim Cook at Apple, and I said, ‘Tim, you know one of the things that will be a real achievement for me is when I get Apple to build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States, where instead of going to China, and going to Vietnam, and going to the places that you go to, you’re making your product right here.’
Tom’s response to Trump’s statement was short but positive as it seems.
[Cook] said, ‘I understand that.’ I said: ‘I think we’ll create the incentives for you, and I think you’re going to do it. We’re going for a very large tax cut for corporations, which you’ll be happy about.’Apparently, the problem with iPhones being assembled in China and not in America stems from the fact that America lacks competent workers.
This is what Cook told Charlie Rose on that matter: “The U.S., over time, began to stop having as many vocational kind of skills. I mean, you can take every tool and die maker in the United States and probably put them in a room that we’re currently sitting in. In China, you would have to have multiple football fields.”
So, it remains to be seen what would be the Trump’s next move, whether he will start working on transferring Apple to America immediately or foster innovations in school systems. His move will, of course, depend on the cost of such an endeavor, which could lead to the introduction of taxes on the goods from China and some changes in the iPhone prices. This topic has just begun to heat up.
