Having first starred in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds then did everything in his power to realize the project that would be dedicated to the character he played (Merc With The Mouth). From that point, he has always been at the helm of “Deadpool” development. Reynolds undertook this duty with true passion, and it remained like that all the way. However, such a passionate approach eventually led to a battle between him and film director at the time, Tim Miller.
In an interview recently published by GQ, Reynolds gave an extensive explanation of what happened between him and Miller during the course of “Deadpool” production. Namely, he had in mind what exactly he wanted that project to look like, but the problem was he didn’t see the same thing like the director, who had a somewhat different vision.
In the interview, Reynolds didn’t try to keep their clash under wraps, but he spoke rather openly about the issues they had to deal with. The actor claims that “making the movie was very, very difficult” for the whole crew working on it was “the most passionate group of individuals” he has ever worked with. However, Ryan also adds that hotbed of emotions was actually a double-edged sword since the actor is convinced that it has also contributed to the development process in a way. Furthermore, Reynolds admits that Miller is “a visual-effects wizard,” but he didn’t like it when he didn’t stick to that job of his, but rather meddled with what was Reynolds’s responsibility (character and tone things). Finally, he concludes by saying: “Eleven years I’ve been trying to get this Sisyphus rock up the hill, and it kept rolling back on top of me. So I’m gonna be all the way over it from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes.”
According to this interview, we can come to the conclusion that these two have found a way to make things work by strictly dividing their duties, with Reynolds cooperating with writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, and Miller being in charge of only visual elements. However, their conflicts didn’t magically disappear, which had an impact on the movie sequel production. It has been recently announced that Miller departed “Deadpool 2” due to “creative differences” between him and Reynolds. We still don’t know who his replacement might be.
All in all, we can only hope that behind-the-scene conflicts and clashes eventually won’t do harm to the sequel and that it will be at least as successful as the original, which turned out to be one of the best comic book movies in spite of the rough time it had gone through.
