Through entire offseason, Cowboys were talking about getting in a speedy, deep threat wide receiver. Now they went on and did it. Just yesterday Dallas franchise signed a veteran Deonte Thompson.
Before the 2017 season started, Cowboys believed that they have an outstanding WR group. After the campaign ended, they were proved wrong as their receivers failed to deliver. Four different WRs visiting Star in Frisco in just last two days shows that they are trying to fix that part of the team.
The biggest story revolving around America’s Team was the future of their No1 receiver Dez Bryant. There were talks about a pay cut, and even about his release. So far nothing happened, and he’s currently still their first choice at WR. At least until the draft.
The rest of the receiving corps is also under the question mark. Last year Terrance Williams signed a new four-year $17 million contract. The deal is considered a team-friendly, but even under those conditions, he failed to record a single touchdown in 2017. Cole Beasley playing in the slot led the Cowboys in receptions in 2016 managing 75 receptions for 833 yards and five touchdowns. But last year he only had 36 catches. This year is the final in his contract, and with a young stud, Ryan Switzer breathing behind his back Cole’s days in Dallas could be numbered.
Other receivers on the roster are Brice Butler, a free agent who played his last in Dallas for sure, and Noah Brown. The later one has still left to prove himself on any level. Last year he was only on the filed when the team needed an additional blocker.
During the free agency, the most buzz around Cowboys was generated by rumors. America’s Team allegedly was in a race for Sammy Watkins, who signed a three-year, $48million with Chiefs. When Allen Robinson became available, fans wanted him signed, but front office knew they couldn’t afford him. In the last few days, Big D franchise hosted Allen Hurns, Dontrelle Inman, Justin Hunter and Deonte Thompson. While the fans again hoped for former Jaguar to be signed the FO went in with a one-year $2.5 million signing of Deonte Thompson. $1 million went into signing bonus.
Thompson is a six-year veteran who even won a Super Bowl as a member of Baltimore Ravens in 2012. He also played for Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills. Last year with Bills he had 27 receptions for 430 yards, with 15.9 yards per catch. This guy also plays on special teams as a punt returner. He was brought in as a replacement for Brice Butler, and we hope as an upgrade. If he repeats some of the big plays he had for Bills last year, he will be just that.
