Johnny Manziel is trying to get his life back on track, and for the first time, it seems genuine. For the last few months, Johnny has been all about NFL comeback. Earlier this week he was a guest at Good Morning America and talked about what went wrong in his life and career. That was pretty much the first time Manziel sounded sincere and was opened on every subject regarding his misdemeanor in the past. If everything he said turns out to be true, there might be a place for him in the league, maybe even in Dallas.
Yes, it sounds crazy that Cowboys would want to bring Johnny Football to Texas, but why not?
America’s Team almost drafted him in 2014. Jerry Jones wanted Manziel, but luckily they picked Zack Martin, and the rest is history. Martin is considered one of the best guards in the league and was selected to Pro-Bowl four times in four seasons. Former Texas A&M prodigy left NFL after two seasons. He completed 57% of his passes for 1,675 yards and seven touchdowns followed with seven interceptions. He recorded 259 rushing yards and one rushing TD. Manziel’s career ended after inconsistent play and numerous off-field issues.
Johnny is adamant that those days are behind him, and that after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he’s clean of any illegal substances and is regular at therapy which helped him a lot.
Talking on Good Morning America, Johnny Football said: “You are left staring at the ceiling by yourself and in that depression and back in that dark hole of sitting in a room by yourself, super depressed, thinking about all the mistakes you made in your life, what did that get me? Where did that get me except out of the NFL? Where did that get me? Disgraced.”
Now, Manziel sounds sincere, and his comeback could be on the cards. If he hits around the league looking for a tryout some team might offer him a place on the roster. Dallas Cowboys could do it. Manziel is close to being a legend in Texas. Jerry Jones loves him, and he actually could be a healthy competition for Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Manziel is 6’0″ and 210lbs, so he’s not exactly a perfect proportions QB, but there are qualities to his game which he proved in his two seasons at Texas A&M.
Another thing is press coverage. Jones craves for this type of attention. The entire league would talk about Cowboys and Manziel. Not to mention the quantity of merchandise that he would move in Texas and other states considering the popularity of Dallas Cowboys.
In the end, America’s Team has nothing to lose. They need someone to provide competition for Prescott, and Manziel wouldn’t cost a dime by today’s standards in NFL. And what if Johnny Football justifies his nickname and performs as he did while he was an Aggie? Anything is possible.
