Ezekiel Elliott was deadly in executing plays on Sunday vs. 49ers. His 219 yards from scrimmage was his career best. With three touchdowns to his name, he was the name on everyone’s lips after 40-10 thrashing of San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys needed a good performance from Elliott, a win, and they got both.
But, without diminishing his contribution to Cowboys victory, let’s talk about Dak Prescott. In last three games, he threw for at least three touchdowns. This feat wasn’t accomplished even by Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach. Against 49ers he had 234 yards out of 25 passes. 16 of those were completed. This gives you a passing rating of 134.0.
Zack Martin had only words of praise for Prescott: “He’s extremely poised and runs this offense at a very high level. It’s fun to be in the huddle with a guy like that.”
The 49ers secondary isn’t one of the best in the league and Dak took advantage of this. He threw the ball to seven different receivers. In the moments when not passing, he used Elliott who had a monster game. Also, his 12-play, 86-yard drive when he connected with veteran Jason Witten for a TD was a memorable play. Witten caught the ball with one hand, showing that his place in the Hall of Fame is already cemented.
His monstrous game was capped with Elliott’s 72-yard catch for a touchdown. The run was second longest in Ezekiel’s career, with first coming last season against Steelers (83 yards). The next drive was even more impressive. Prescott marched the field for 80 yards after 13 plays. He scored a 2-yard TD by himself. The second half started with another score when Dak connected with Dez Bryant for a touchdown. Bryant is now tied with Hall of Famer Bob Hayes with 71 carer catches for a TD in Cowboys history.
Back to Prescott, this was his third consecutive game with a passer rating over 100.0. It also was his seventh game with at least three TD’s and one or fewer interceptions. In his first two seasons, only Dan Marino had more (nine). The match vs. 49ers was his fifth straight performance with multiple touchdown plays. His three games with three or more touchdowns tie him with quarterbacks and franchise legends such as Tony Romo and Don Meredith.
But, despite all these feats accomplished Prescott keeps his foots to the ground: “We didn’t win three games in a row, so it really doesn’t mean that much. For me, it’s about the wins at the end of the day. Touchdowns are great and they obviously help us win, but three wins to me sounds better than three-touchdown games.”
Nonetheless, Prescott is on fire, and if he keeps his game up, Cowboys might turn this season around. They are currently on a 3-3 score, putting them on the third spot in NFC East. With Redskins playing Eagles on Monday, they might be tied with Washington, but further behind Philly if Eagles win. If Redskins win, they might be up for the first spot for grab, considering they are facing Redskins next. In that case, NFC East will be there to be conquered.
