Another quite interesting theory, which also seems to be quite popular with the hardcore fans is the one about Samuel Ball. This slave turned free man managed somehow to buy a piece of land on Oak Island. According to the stories, Ball was born in South Carolina, and later on, he escaped from the plantation to join the British army and get his freedom. Thanks to John Murray, Governor of Virginia, who brought proclamation in 1775, all black males would gain their freedom for doing so.
