Marty studied at Michigan Tech where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma fraternities. After he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977, he attended Law School at the University, from which he graduated in 1982. He established Terra Energy, Ltd., an oil and gas exploration and production company which he sold to CMS Energy for $60 million.
