BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ: BBRY) has decided to discontinue its app generator service called “BlackBerry App Generator”. The company conveyed this message to its users through email.
BlackBerry App Generator is a service that allows the users build custom apps according to their needs. The process of creating an app is completed within few minutes. Mippin, the brand owned and operated by Refresh Mobile Limited, worked with BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ: BBRY) to create apps that will run on BlackBerry OS. The company has now decided to discontinue its involvement. Users will be provided with the option to have their accounts transferred to Mippin.
The move seems to come out of the decision of the company to shift its focus from developers to enterprises. As the company will be catering the needs of enterprises, individual users will no longer be provided with the app generator service. The company has however decided to give its user an option to enjoy similar service through Mippin’s app development platform.
In the product update, the company says, “The BlackBerry App generator end of life is planned for May 29, 2015. To ensure your service is not disrupted, BlackBerry is offering you the opportunity to use the same App Generator service through Mippin.” The company will ask users for their consent to transfer their account to Mippin. The existing customers, who do not provide the consent, will no longer have access to their apps on BlackBerry World. These apps will be removed from the app store on May 29, 2015.
Mippin is an award winning app development platform. In 2013, it was selected as a finalist in the prestigious “Mobile Innovation of the Year Award” by BlackBery. Association of Online Publishers selected Mippin App Factory as a finalist for “Best Technology Partner” category in 2012. The brand will now look over the app development of BlackBerry App Generator’s current users.
Though BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ: BBRY) has offered the transfer of service, the service will be free only till December 31, 2015.
