BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s QNX platform is apparently powering Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s CarPlay. though still needs to be verified and confirmed 100%, rumors and news indicate that it might actually be true.
Barron’s first reported that BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) “is up 1.5% at recent check and it seems that it’s rising on reports that it’s QNX platform is powering Apple’s (AAPL) CarPlay.”
BGR also reported that Apple on Monday unveiled its CarPlay which allows car owners to be able to use their iPhones to control the infotainment systems in their cars.
“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”
Car manufacturers that will use Apple’s CarPlay were Mercedes, Volvo, Ferrari, and early partners like Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Kia, Nissan, and Toyota.
Couple of weeks ago, Ford announced that it was replacing Microsoft’s Windows with BlackBerry’s QNX in their Sync System.
BGR also reported that N4BB has reached out to Paul Leroux at QNX and he has confirmed their presumption:
“Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles. We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support for Apple CarPlay.”
While the idea that Apple and BlackBerry can be partners sounds far fetched, it’s actually true that Apple is a strategic partner.
BlackBerry’s QNX has about 69% of the auto market share and Apple is a dominant force in the smartphone market in the US, it’s only logical to see that most, if not all car manufacturers would want to add Apple’s CarPlay in their models. Apple is clearly a winner here but BlackBerry will definitely be the bigger monopoly in the car OS market.
There seems to be a bright future for BlackBerry if it executes on its plans right. Back in January they announced that QNX Software Systems Launches New Cloud Business to Power the Internet of Things.
On the BBM side, things are improving and with their latest announcement, one would think that BlackBerry is not going away anytime soon.
