BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has introduced paid BBM stickers for iPhone and Android phones, which drove up on iPhone sales chart, in vital Asian and African geographies. The premium packs include 20-25 stickers priced around $2 in various currency around the world. These icons are emojis designed on some themes that could be inserted to text messages to enhance the visual.
BBM stickers rising in popularity
Japanese and Korean consumers are greatly fond of stickers, and apps like Line and Kakao Talk are popular messaging app, sales of these are rising as much as millions of dollars per quarter for Asian text apps. On the other hand, BlackBerry is relatively new in Asia and the user base is older and more professional compared to other chat apps. This is probably the reason why nothing could be said on the success level of BBM stickers, says a report from Forbes.
However, the start has been encouraging as, in South Africa, BBM has moved to #3 on iPhone Social Networking app chart measured by revenue generation. Popular Asian chat apps like LINE and WeChat are at #22 and #37. BlackBerry is #3 on Social networking revenue chart in Indonesia with competitors LINE at #1, Path at #2, Viber at #6, Kakao Talk at #14 and WeChat at #18.
Early signs are positive
Indonesia has been a thriving market for all popular messaging apps. BBM outperformed many other leading chat app, the moment stickers were introduced. BBM is standing to the level of Viber in app sales even though Viber has been valued approximately $1 billion, and it was far ahead than BBM in providing in-app purchases.
BBM stickers have been launched just couple of days back, and some of the users have not yet updated their app. It is also a fact that interests tend to fade away as time passes.
Surging popularity of BBM on iOS and Android indicates that the user base is relatively young than BlackBerry users few years back. BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) was popular among the businessmen due to its high price and exclusive features. BBM has become more popular among the young iOS and Android users along with few high status businessman and people.
