John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) said he is prepared to file charges against individuals who will leak information on the upcoming products of the company. He emphasized that he takes the privacy of the company seriously.
Leaks mislead stakeholders
Chen explained his position against product leakers in a blog post. According to him, “One of the most frustrating things for all of us at BlackBerry is when a critical and confidential project is reported in the media before we are ready to discuss it. Leaks are, at their best, distracting, and at their worst downright misleading to our stakeholders. The business implications of a leak are seldom advantageous.”
He added,” I recognize that, in some cases, the leaks reflect people’s genuine interest in BlackBerry… But, when curiosity turns to criminality, we must take strong action. We will always take appropriate actions to prevent leaks from happening and in some cases this means prosecuting individuals — internally or externally — who leak confidential information.”
BlackBerry receives FIPS certification
Separately, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) obtained the required security clearance for its multi-platform mobility management solution under the BlackBerry Enterprise 10 (BES 10) offering. According to the Canadian smartphone manufacturer, Secure Work Space for devices powered by iOS and Android operating systems is now Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certified.
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) that the FIPS certification ensures that its encryption technology met all the requirements and passed rigorous testing to be used by government agencies to encrypt and secure sensitive information.
The company said government agencies in Canada and United States will now be able to confidently deploy Secure Work Space and securely separate sensitive corporate data from personal content on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets powered by iOS and Android operating systems.
Scott Totzke, senior vice president of Security Group at BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) said, “Blackberry is considered the most trusted and secured mobile platform. The FIPS 140-2 validation for Secure Work Space for iOS and Android demonstrates the multi-platform security capabilities that BlackBerry delivers for customers, helping governments and enterprises alike to deploy third-party devices with more confidence and less risk.”
Ben Hoffman, mobility analysts at IDC also stated that the FIPS 140-2 certification demonstrates that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) meet the strict requirements demanded by enterprises. He added, “Organizations, in both the public and private sectors, must take the necessary steps to protect sensitive data and ensure that their mobile solutions offer the highest level of security.”
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued FIPDS140-2 certification to BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB). The institute is responsible in coordinating requirement and standards for cryptographic modules certification.
